“Music is the universal language of mankind” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I hope that my students will develop an appreciation for music while learning with me. My main purpose in teaching cello is to develop a healthy way to play the cello. I would like the students to achieve the most beautiful tone on the cello and develop musical expression.

Biography
Dr. I-Bei Lin is Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Dr. Lin, a native of Taiwan, received her Doctor of Music degree with Honors and her Master of Music degree from Northwestern University. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree with Distinction from the Eastman School of Music.
She has given recitals at Carnegie Hall and abroad in ten countries: Belgium, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Austria, Germany, China, Spain, France, New Zealand, and Thailand. She gave her solo debut recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. A fabulous review by Edith Eisler from the Carnegie hall debut stated, “ Dr. Lin is a very fine cellist. Her technique is effortless, secure and masterful; her tone is pure, warm, sonorous and variable in color, nuance and intensity. …She seemed to have a natural affinity for every style and idiom in a program encompassing several centuries and nationalities… Dr. Lin played them to the hilt, tossing off the fireworks with ease and aplomb and reveling in her own virtuosity.” Another review of her recital in Bangkok enthused, ". . .the grand, deep, and rich sound of I-Bei's cello, which reminded me of the Russian cello master Rostropovich..” An excellent review of her faculty recital can also be found: http://nyconcertreview.com/tag/cellist-i-bei-lin/
In 1987, while living in Taiwan, Dr. I-Bei Lin's exceptional talent was recognized by the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. She was the only cellist in her native country to be selected for and offered a full scholarship to study in the United States. She has won prizes in several solo competitions, including The Artist International Competition in New York City, First Prize for the String Division of the Taiwan National Concert Artist Competition, the Alpha Delta Kappa International Fine Arts Grants Competition, the First America Midwest Young Artist Competition, the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Chi-Mei Young Artist Competition in Taiwan, and the Taiwan National Music Competition.
From a young age, she has been active as a performer in chamber music and orchestral concerts in the United States, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, and Denmark. She has played with various chamber music groups in several music festivals, including the Meadowmount School of Music (founded by Galamian), the Quartet Program in Massachusetts, the Pacific International Concert Artists, Inc. in Honolulu, and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, where she received an excellent chamber music review, which said in part, "...it was marvelous how the cellist I-Bei Lin stimulated the play of her respective ensemble through her impulses and, at the same time, transmitted the impulses of others - not only through sound, but also through expressive body movements and communicative facial expression.” Dr. Lin served as a principal cellist at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra in Germany and Denmark and the Tanglewood Young Artist Festival Orchestra in Boston. She performed with the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra in Japan under Christoph Eschenbach and Michael Tilson Thomas, and the New York String Seminar Orchestra in Carnegie Hall under Alexander Schneider.
Prior to her appointment to the University of Hawai`i, Dr. Lin served as acting cello professor at Luther College in Iowa, and as a teaching assistant at both Northwestern University and Meadowmount School of Music. Her primary teachers included Hans Jorgen Jensen, Steve Doane and Pamela Frame. She plays Testore school Cello from Milan, Italy,Cir 1700s. and Cello Bow By LOUIS PIERNOT.
